New partnership to strengthen innovation for sustainable development

To effectively tackle complex global challenges such as poverty, inequality and climate crises, the SDC favours innovation with a measurable impact. A new partnership with the Fund for Innovation in Development (FID) supports evidence-based solutions for sustainable development and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Global challenges are becoming increasingly complex. To effectively combat poverty, inequality and climate crises, innovative solutions with a measurable impact are needed that can be further developed and delivered in different contexts.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) makes targeted use of research and innovation to generate new knowledge and solid evidence about what works under which conditions. On this basis, solutions can be specifically tested, further developed and evidence-based decisions facilitated in both policy and practice.

A new SDC partnership with the Fund for Innovation in Development (FID) makes a targeted contribution to strengthening innovation for sustainable development. The FID is a funding instrument that provides tailor-made funding and technical support to test, evaluate and scale up evidence-based solutions. Under the chairpersonship of Nobel Prize winner Esther Duflo, the FID supports innovations that achieve sustainable developmental impact and contribute to shaping public policy in low- and middle-income countries.

The partnership is part of the SDC's research and innovation approach, which aims to develop new solutions and anchor them sustainably and effectively. It also stands for a joint commitment to a more coordinated and integrated European approach to promoting innovation, as complex challenges require coordinated responses:

No single actor can generate the scale of impact needed to address today's complex development challenges. By pooling resources, evidence, and expertise, we can create the conditions for relevant stakeholders to move forward together from the start and accelerate the uptake of proven solutions.
Odile Robert, head of the Analysis and Research section at SDC

The FID and the SDC are joining forces to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda more effectively and make a targeted contribution to the sustainable reduction of poverty and inequalities.
