Monitoring

Monitoring is the process of systematic data collection, analysis, collation and documentation during an ongoing project. It is an important element of a responsible and result-oriented project management cycle.

Continuous monitoring is crucial for lesson-learning and decision-making, especially for the steering and adjustment of ongoing programmes and investments in new projects or initiatives.

Good monitoring can flag early on if activities are not on track to meet their objectives. Factors that can potentially lead to the failure of a project are thus identified at an early stage, allowing for adjustments to be made during the further implementation of the project and follow-up projects.

The SDC collects data on defined indicators at periodic intervals during the implementation of a project, programme or strategy, and is consequently able to review whether its targets are being met. This information allows for evidence-based decisions on whether adjustments are already needed during programme implementation.

Since 2016, the SDC has also been using standard indicators. Standard indicators facilitate the aggregation of quantitative data across projects and countries and their collation with the goals and strategy of international cooperation as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDC has been digitalising indicators in a Results Data Management (RDM) system since 2023. This has helped to improve cross-cutting data analysis and reporting.
