The IOM is based in Geneva's Morillons district in a building that it has owned since 1984 and that has never been renovated. As the structure no longer meets today's standards, the IOM has opted for demolishing it, so as to rebuild it in line with the applicable norms and the organisation's current needs. This will be more cost-effective in the long term. Subject to parliamentary approval, this interest-free loan of CHF 44.7 from the Confederation, repayable over 50 years, will enable work to begin in 2026. The Canton of Geneva will also contribute CHF 21.6 million to the project. Additionally, in June 2022, Parliament approved a CHF 5.7 million loan for preparatory studies.

As a host state, Switzerland is committed to the upkeep of International Geneva's property stock. Supporting the IOM's reconstruction project is thus in Switzerland's interest, as it ensures the organisation will operate in a functional, safe, and up-to-standard building, providing optimal conditions for the IOM to continue its activities. By offering such conditions to international actors on its territory, Switzerland makes a significant contribution to the smooth functioning of international relations. This renovation also helps strengthen International Geneva, particularly in terms of infrastructure, and forms part of the objectives of the Federal Council's Foreign Policy Strategy 2024–27.

A key partner for Switzerland

Established in 1951, the IOM is the main intergovernmental organisation dealing with migration. Part of the UN system, it plays a vital role in offering policy and practical guidance on migration. The IOM takes action in emergencies, building the resilience of all displaced persons, particularly the most vulnerable ones, and enhancing governmental capacities to manage all the forms and effects of population movements.

A key partner, the IOM also serves as a platform for sharing information. Switzerland also supports IOM projects in migrants' countries of origin, transit and destination. And the IOM partners with Switzerland for the return of displaced persons and their reintegration.
