Measuring aid effectiveness

The SDC measures its effectiveness through evaluations and continuous monitoring. These instruments allow for a continuous review and adjustment of programmes and projects. The SDC regularly publishes reports on the results achieved and challenges faced by Switzerland’s international cooperation to inform the general public and provide accountability.

Switzerland’s International Cooperation Strategy sets out the strategic framework of its international cooperation activities. It is implemented at several levels: through individual projects, country and thematic programmes, and multilateral contributions. Their effectiveness is measured through evaluations and continuous monitoring. These instruments allow for a continuous review and adjustment of programmes and projects.

The results-based management of programmes and projects is integral to the SDC’s organisational culture. Switzerland’s international cooperation is aligned with international standards on effectiveness, such as the Global Partnership for Effective Co-operation (GPEDC) and the guiding principles on Managing for Sustainable Development Results of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The SDC regularly publishes reports on the results of its projects and programmes and the improvements achieved in the living conditions of beneficiary populations.

Every year, the SDC publishes a joint report with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) on Switzerland’s international cooperation.

Every four years, the Federal Council approves a new International Cooperation Strategy. At the end of each strategy period, an accountability report is published on the results and challenges for Switzerland’s international cooperation.
