Asia and Americas Division
The Asia and Americas Division focuses on the poorest countries in these regions, which are often beset by conflicts or natural disasters. It helps people in need, combats poverty and supports sustainable economic, environmental and social development. Through its programmes, the SDC addresses global challenges such as climate change and promotes long-term stability and prosperity in these regions.
In Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the SDC focuses on the least developed countries, most of which are fragile and affected by conflicts or natural disasters. To meet these challenges, it applies an integrated approach to its activities that combines development cooperation and humanitarian aid. While humanitarian aid responds to the immediate and urgent needs of the population, development cooperation has a long-term impact and helps to sustainably improve the living conditions of people in disadvantaged countries.
Together with the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the Asia and Americas Division is responsible for the Swiss contribution to the Asian Development Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, both of which are among the most important multilateral development institutions in their regions. The Asia and Americas Division coordinates peacebuilding programmes with the Peace and Human Rights Division (PHRD) of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
In Central and East Asia, the division supports projects in the priority regions of Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) and the South Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia), as well as in Afghanistan. It also supports selected activities in China and North Korea.
The division’s work in South and South East Asia covers the priority countries of Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal, as well as the Mekong priority region (Cambodia, Laos). It also maintains a regional thematic hub in Bangkok covering the areas of climate change, water, disaster risk reduction and disaster relief.
In the Latin America and Caribbean region, the division is responsible for humanitarian programmes in Haiti, Colombia and Venezuela, and maintains a regional thematic hub in Lima focusing on climate change, water, disaster risk reduction and disaster relief.
